Holland Park
Client: City of Surrey For the last 30 years, Holland Park has been the signature urban park for the city of Surrey's Whalley downtown district. In 2003, van der Zalm + associates was awarded the project to revitalize the park with a new masterplan concept. This project would eventually be expanded to include providing the city with both design and construction documents for the completion of the proposed park project. After completion of the master plan, VDZ completed working drawings for an approved concept entitled 'Green City'. This concept played on the notion of maintaining an oasis of nature within an expanding city, as well as using the metaphor of suburban development as a form generator for the patterning and layout of the park. The Park was opened in May of 2008, by Mayor and Council and has rapidly become the official public gathering place and festival site for the city of Surrey. A second phase has been added through a provincial Spirt Square grant. The second phase of development will expand opportunities for celebration and performances. Key aspects of the masterplan will also be realized, including formal entries at West Gate, and Holland Gate. The designation of Surrey as an Olympic city - also makes Holland Park, the site for all Olympic celebrations in the city for 2010. ![]() |
